July 19: TWO 14-YEAR-OLDS IN SCOTLAND TEAM
FOR GIRLS' HOME INTERNATIONALS
There are two 14-year-olds - Krystle Caithness from St Andrews and
Roseanne Niven of Crieff - among the four new caps in the Scottish
team of eight for the girls' home internationals at Pyle & Kenfig
Golf Club, South Wales from August 12 to 14.
Krystle, a member of the St Regulus club, was beaten finalist in
the BP Scottish girls' championship at Newmachar last week, having
been the youngest player since Jane Connachan in the 1970s to qualify
for the match-play stages of the Scottish women's amateur championship
over the Old Course, St Andrews in May.
Roseanne won the SLGA St Leonards Scottish Under-16 girls' open
stroke-play championship at Drumoig in May; reached the final of
the Perth & Kinross women's county championship and was the
most successful P&K player on her debut in the North Division
team championship at Murcar.
The others new to this level of under-18 play are Louise Fleming
from the Borders and Sjavon Wilson who lives at Portlethen, just
south of Aberdeen.
The team will be spearheaded by the current holder of both Scotland's
girls championships - Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan). She won the
BP Under-18 match-play title at Newmachar on Friday and last summer
was the surprise winner of the BP Scottish Under-21 girls stroke-play
championship at Baberton.
The team, captained again by Lindsey Anderson, is:
KELLY BROTHERTON (Tulliallan).
KRYSTLE CAITHNESS (St Regulus).
DAWN DEWAR (Monifieth).
LOUISE FLEMING (The Roxburghe).
ROSEANNE NIVEN (Crieff).
KATE O'SULLIVAN (Cochrane Castle).

July 14: Carly
Booth bids to become youngest ever Scottish girls champion
Perthshire wee wonder golfing girl Carly Booth. pictured right,
has been setting new age marks all season. Not long after her 11th
birthday in June, little Carly became the youngest women's club
champion in Britain ... the youngest five-handicap female golfer
in the country ... then youngest ever player to qualify for the
Grand Finals of the Nick Faldo Junior Series.
The last Scottish girl golfing prodigy was Jane Connachan from Musselburgh.
She was a scratch golfer when she was 12 years old and a Curtis
Cup player for Great Britain & Ireland when she was 16. But Jane,
who quit as a tournament professional when she was only 27 because
she had lost the desire to play the game, did not win the first
of her hat-trick of Scottish girls' match-play titles until she
was 14 years of age.
So, even if little Carly does not win the BP Scottish girls' championship
which begins at Newmachar, near Aberdeen tomorrow (Tuesday), she
will still have time on her side to claim another "youngest ever"
title.
Carly
is just one of a crop of very talented youngsters on the Scottish
girls' golfing scene. Others include Roseanne Niven (Crieff), 14,
pictured left, winner of the SLGA St Leonards Under-16 open girls'
championship against all-comers at Drumoig in April and, only a
week or two ago, Perth & Kinross's most successful team member in
her debut for the women's county side at the Northern Division championships.
Then there's Krystle Caithness (St Regulas), pictured right, at
14 the youngest since Jane Connachan to qualify for the match-play
stages of the Scottish women's championship over the Old Course,
St Andrews in May.
The player with the lowest handicap in the field at Newmachar is
Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan) who plays off one. Kelly was a surprise
winner of the BP Scottish girls Under-21 stroke-play championship
at Baberton last summer, after which she gained a golf scholarship
at a David Leadbetter golf academy in Florida. With all these starlets
twinkling away, it promises to be one of the best Scottish girls
championships in years. Draw

July 9: Under 14 Championships, Helensburgh
Two members of Ranfurly Castle cleaned up in the 2003 Scottish Girls
Under 14 Championship held at Helensburgh today. 38 handicap Lauren
Mackin won the tournament with 47 stableford ponits and her club-mate
Megan Briggs (13 Handicap) was not far behind on 44 points. No doubt
their handicaps will come rocketing down! Carly Booth (Comrie) won
the under 12 section with 36 ponits.
In the Boys Championship, the winner was Daniel Shevill from Stocksfield,
Newcastle with a superb round of 70. His outward 31 and inward 39
contained four birdies. Second was Michael Main from Kirkcaldy with
a 71, and Tommy Mitchell (Longside) took third place. Scores

SCOTTISH GIRLS ENJOY TRIP TO SOUTH WALES
Scottish Ladies Golf Association official Pat Hutton is optimistic
that the Scotland squad will improve on last year's showing in the
British girls' home internationals in August following a two-day
trip to South Wales to play over the course, Pyle & Kenfig.
"The squad had an excellent trip to Wales. Pyle and Kenfig is a
great links course. Monday was very windy but Tuesday was a much
calmer day," said Mrs Hutton. "The 12 girls had the opportunity
to play the course and get a feel for it. Hopefully they have returned
home to dream about it and the required shots."

ST LEONARDS START SECOND CHILDREN'S GOLF EVENT
St Leonards School in St Andrews is to organise a golf competition
for all Preparatory school children during the 2004 summer term.
The 'St Leonards Prep School Challenge' will be played over one
of the golf courses in St Andrews. St Andrews Links Trust has
agreed to support the event and the venue will be announced shortly.
Mrs June Caithness, director of golf at St Leonards, said: "I
am delighted that this new competition will be happening early
next summer. I am sure it will attract many young golfers to St
Andrews and give them the opportunity to play together and sample
the wonderful facilities available here.
"St Leonards is joint initiator of the Scottish Ladies Golf Association
/ St Leonards Under-16 stroke-play championship, and this new
Prep school competition will reinforce our commitment to promoting
the game of golf to youngsters. There will be one practice round
followed by two competition rounds and trophies will be awarded
to the winning players in several age groups."
At a recent celebration dinner marking the 10th anniversary of
St Leonards Golf Club, the school announced the launch of its
new golf programme, under the guidance of Jim Farmer, one time
coach to Open champion Paul Lawrie, and Elliot Rowan, one of the
top Scottish coaches of the past 20 years.
The new golf programme was given a significant boost when Lady
Angela Bonallack recently accepted the post of president of St
Leonards Golf Club.

June 19: OPERATION PUTS CLARE-MARIE OUT OF SCOTS
GIRLS' TRIP TO WALES
Clare-Marie Carlton, 16-year-old Fereneze member who became one
of the youngest winners of the Renfrewshire women's county titles
a few weeks ago, has had to withdraw from a Scottish Ladies Golfing
Association squad of 12 girls who are bound for South Wales on a
48hr familiarisation trip next week. Miss Carlton is having surgery
on ankle injury instead of flying from Glasgow to Cardiff early
on Monday morning and travelling on to the Pyle & Kenfig golf course,
where the girls' home internationals will be played from August
12 to 14.
"The
plan is to play a practice round on Monday after lunchtime and then
two rounds of Tuesday before flying back to Glasgow that evening,"
said Mrs Pat Hutton (Lanark), chairman of the SLGA training committee.
The squad will be accompanied by team captain Lindsey Anderson (Gullane)
and SLGA national coach, Karyn Dallas, the Kirriemuir GC professional.
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), pictured right, winner of The Royal
Bank of Scotland Scottish schoolgirls championship at Hilton Park
earlier this week, has accepted a late invitation to join the party.
Laura Aitken (Falkirk Tryst) has had to decline selection because
of school examinations. Kerri Harper, the Inverness women's club
champion and Grampian TV girls' title-winner last autumn, has been
drafted into the squad which now reads: Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan),
Krystle Caithness (St Regulus), Dawn Dewar (Monifieth), Louise Fleming
(The Hirsel), KerrI Harper (Inverness), Lesley Hendry (Routenburn),
Roseanne Niven (Crieff), Kate O'Sullivan (Cochrane Castle), Kylie
Walker (Buchanan Castle), Gemma Webster (Hilton Park), Kirsty Wells

June 17: SCOTLAND SCHOOLS GOLF TEAMS
Louise Fleming (Hirsel) was unavailable to accept a place in the
Scotland team in the annual schools international match against
England at Cardrona Hotel Golf & Country Club, Peebles on Monday,
September 1. Runner-up Louise had gained automatic selection through
finishing in the leading five of the girls' event at The Royal Bank
of Scotland Scottish schoolboys' championship at Hilton Park on
Monday. But she was available for selection for the smaller Scotland
squad to take part in the European schools team championship at
Vale of Glamorgan Golf Club, South Wales from July 7 to 10.
Dawn Dewar, the defending Scottish schoolgirls champion, finished
outwith the top five at Hilton Park but the Monifieth player, who
is bound for Stirling University after the summer holidays, retained
her place from last year when the Scottish Schools Golf Association
officials exercised their prerogative to select one girl on previous
form. Full team lists

Scottish Schools Champions
Kylie Walker (Glasgow) and Simon Hislop
(Selkirk)
June 16: SCOTTISH SCHOOLS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
Selkirk's Simon Hislop and Kylie Walker from Glasgow were surprise
winners of the individual titles in The Royal Bank of Scotland
Scottish schools golf championships over the Hilton Park Golf
Club Hilton and Allander courses yesterday (Monday).
Simons, a 16-year-old two-handicapper, returned a 70 and 68 for
138, to win by four shots from the favourite, Paul O'Hara (North
Lanarkshire).
Hislop had an eagle 2 and four birdies in his 68 over the Allander
course after matching O'Hara's 70 over the Hilton lay-out. Paul
had a 72 in his second round.
Full Scotland cap Wallace Booth (Perth & Kinross) finished
in fourth place on 144, one shot behind third-placed Richard Graham
(Stirlingshire).
Kylie Walker, a 16-year-old seven-handicapper at Buchanan Castle,
is also a member at Hilton Park and she used her local knowledge
to compile an excellent score of 69 over the Allander course.
That put her well clear of the field and she could afford to score
80 over the Hilton course for a total of 149 - and still win by
a couple of shots from Louise Fleming (Borders) with Krystle Caithness
(Fife), Gemma Webster (Glasgow) and Lesley Hendry (North Ayrshire)
in joint third place on the 154 mark.
North Lanarkshire retained the boys' title while Glasgow won the
